So if you remember, a little while ago we were tootin our own horns because Old South Vintage Rentals was nice enough to name some totally gorgeous pieces of their new couture lounge collection after us. No biggie, just counts as minor celebrity status in our world, we’ll let you know when our ego’s deflate.

Anyway it got me thinking about all the fabulous design details that can take a wedding from beautiful to “Angelina-Jolie-all-up-in-this-business-incredible”. I wish they bottled that stuff and sold it at CVS, my hair would always be on point. There are so many elements that come together to create what we call “the look and feel” of a wedding. If you have a designer involved with your wedding planning process, these are of the things they’ll go over with you and talk to you about. If not, the next series of posts are going to break down some of the details into bite-sized chunks, so you don’t get overwhelmed.

And we’re starting with…lighting!! Lighting is one of those things where, unless you’re a designer you probably haven’t thought too much about it. And that’s ok, but it is important! Lighting can literally transform a room, it can make a room feel warm, it can create depth and height, and if you’re dealing with a venue where maybe you aren’t 100% on board with some of the room elements, lighting can be used to distract and hide some of these things. It’s magical.

Most of the time when couples go on site visits to view potential venues they are seeing the space in the light of day. And maybe your reception is going to be during the day (in which case yay for you! Natural light = awesome) but the majority of wedding receptions happen in the evening. So it’s important to talk to your venue about the lighting in the space. You don’t want to get ambushed by cold florescent ceiling lights, unless you’re an “Office Space” fan and then maybe that’s totally your jam. If possible take a look at pictures from past events in the space, what kind of lighting did they use? Most venues know what works best in their space.

Ok! So there are several different kinds of lighting elements that we encounter most often. And each of these elements can be used by themselves, in various combinations, or all together.

 UpLighting

Uplighting is exactly what it sounds like. It’s where you take lights that are placed on the ground and aim the light up into the space. Most commonly the light is projected onto walls or columns in order to add color or change the color of a room. It can also add some dimension and visual interest to a room. Spaces that are up-lit feel very elegant. Here are some examples:

Uplighting can be used to really pack a punch and create a really vibrant room.

It can also be more subdued and neutral, just to warm up the space.

And if you’re lucky enough to have textured wall to throw the light on, it creates a really lovely effect.

You don’t have to use uplighting just on walls, here’s a great example of using the lights underneath tables to give them a happy glow.

String lighting

String lighting! Super popular in outdoor venues. Who doesn’t love string lighting? It’s romantic and magical and just lovely. If you can’t tell I’m a huge sucker for some string lighting. My preference is for café string lights.

You have to be careful when using “fairy lights” that the space doesn’t end up looking like a supped up college dorm. But if it’s done right, it’s a home run.

The nice thing about string lights too is that they can be used to enhance the feel of the room OR you can do some really jaw dropping incredible things with them.

Candles

Candles, candles, candles. I mean can anything beat a really amazing array of candles?Essential. This is, after all, the original light source we are talking about. And they are so diverse! You can leave them in simple glass and they are beautiful, or put them in lanterns, float them in water. Candles are most often used to light tables. Without a lighting element on your tables something will feel very amiss. Plus your guests won’t be able to appreciate the wonderful food you are feeding them (and you probably paid a lot for that food, so let it have it’s moment).

Accessory lighting

This is the MOST FUN category. It’s all the extra stuff that doesn’t primarily light the space but kicks it up to that Angelina Jolie category I was talking about, because we all know that Angelina Jolie would be a chandelier if she were a lighting accessory. This is the category for lighting fixtures, and things like gobo’s. A gobo is used to project light in patterns onto a surface.

in my first call with kendra, she said,  “i am more martha stewart than kim kardashian.”  so when this wedding ended up being published on martha stewart online, you can only imagine the joy that was seeing this wedding come full circle was for us.

the idea was pink, which we paired with a flax linen {all custom from i do linens}, along with flowers… lots and lots of flowers in a garden style approach.  between kendra’s love of flowers and the style and artistry of beth from studio flora diva… holy gorgeousness!

here’s is a snapshot of the design inspiration we pulled together…

these next images go down as probably my most favorite from a wedding.  ever. you see.. we put our heart and soul into this.  i felt a tremendous connection with kendra and jeff, and they were such a dream to work with.  so when it comes to wedding day, and everything is coming together, i want them to walk in and love every single thing.  every single element. every detail is important, and to see so many conversations come to life is really the part i love the most.  unless you are talking about this moment.  the one that brought me to tears.  the moment they saw the reception for the first time. so grateful nancy ray and team was their to capture it all.

this wedding post is way… way overdue. you see, kendra and jeff’s wedding in highlands, nc at the old edwards inn and spa was nothing short of a dream to plan and design.  and we had to wait a bit, as the wedding was being published on martha stewart!  {yay!} so much to say about this sweet couple… they were amazing. they had puggles. they had great taste. they hired a great wedding team. and they trusted us.  what more could we ask for?!

there are so many great images from nancy ray photography, we decided to do 2 posts… one for the wedding, and one specifically for the design process.  we hope you enjoy as much as we do!

one of my favorite details… one of the signature drinks at the cocktail hour were beer flights, a nod to their love of travel and trying new beers in different locations.

the couple had a private dinner after pictures before heading to the reception.  what an incredible time to be able to just soak in the moment. and eat. seriously, how cute is this setup?!

Kayla was like a burst of sunshine coming into Verge Events! We met Kayla in early November – so the sunshine was a welcome addition moving into the winter months. Kayla came to Verge to help plan and design her wedding…. 6 weeks away. We took a deep breath, dusted off our big-girl britches and got straight to work! When you work in the wedding industry you learn real quickly to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. This job will stretch you, and that’s why we love it.

Kayla had a wonderful vision for what she wanted her wedding and reception to look a feel like. Her family is very important to her, as are her Asheville roots, she wanted the guests to feel comfortable and at home. Kayla is about as unpretentious as you can get! Her genuine love for things that are natural and beautiful made designing this wedding such a joy!

Kayla and Gerald were married on the Sunset Terrace at the Grove Park Inn– under a gorgeous arbor designed by Studio Flora Diva.

Guests were then invited down to the Grove Park Country Club for the reception and dancing. We loved the band! Tellico provided bluegrass tunes for the guests to kick up their heels to. We’ve worked in the Country Club before, although this is the first wedding we have done in the space, and it is one of our favorites.

Details we loved:

Flowers: Kayla wanted flowers everywhere. She loves flowers and even though this was a winter wedding she wanted the guests to feel like they were in a garden. Studio Flora Diva did a spectacular job – the table arrangements were incredible. My personal favorite detail were the chandeliers in the country club – they were absolutely magical!

The dinnerware: Blue and white china. We really wanted the guests to feel like they were at Kayla and Gerald’s home – just in an elevated way. Kayla grew up with blue and white china in her home and wanted to incorporate it into wedding. Kathy Leiner at Upstyled Setting had the most gorgeous collection, we love it when we get to work with unconventional dinnerware, it adds a really unique personal touch to the space.

The tables and chairs: In keeping with the “at home” feel we sourced mix and match chairs and kitchen tables from Old South Vintage Rentals, the simple elegance of the wood and white wash pared magnificently with the elegance of the blue and white china.

The cake: The Grove Park Inn carried the blue and white china motif onto the cake, and added flowers. The result was a cake that beautifully encompassed and reflected the simple sophistication that Kayla wanted.
